Reasoning on the game interface
Beautiful Artificial Creatures will soon be published on the AppStore for the iOS platform and subsequently on the Google Play Store for Android devices.
This innovation led to a rethinking of many elements within the game starting from the interface that the gamer uses to interact with the environment.
The current one is based on the use of the mouse and at least in part on what LucasArts created for Sam & Max Hit the road, where the right mouse button allows the user to change the action (verb) to be applied to an object, an element of the environment or a character with which you can interact.
On a device such as a tablet or a smartphone, obviously there is a need to change the mechanism as there is no right button.
Having evaluated certain limitations linked to the great development tool used (Visionare Studio) regarding the proper management of a touch interface, I decided to introduce a solution based on a verb coin interface, which in my opinion, if well sized, is well suited to be used on mobile devices.
The need to bring Beautiful Artificial Creatures to mobile platforms also led to the need to significantly increase:
- the size of all fonts;
- the spacing between dialogue options;
- the size of the inventory and map buttons.
Having made all these technical considerations, a further practical one arises. All of the above changes have been introduced for both the desktop and mobile versions of the game. This way I can concentrate any bug-fixing and fine-tuning on a single code base.
Currently the new version of the game with the aforementioned changes is undergoing extensive testing.
